The Department of Science and Technology has set aside PHP 300 million in seed funding to expand the Philippines’ artificial-intelligence data-center capacity. Tech Pilipinas reports that the allocation was disclosed during a House budget hearing, where DOST’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute outlined a plan to make its AI computing capability 26 times more powerful by 2028. The investment could give government researchers and agencies stronger access to domestic computing resources for developing and deploying AI-based applications.
ASTI is looking at commercial data centers where it can install its own graphics-processing units instead of building every facility from scratch. The initiative is framed arounddata sovereignty, giving the government more control over how information is stored and processed. The PHP 300 million is only an initial tranche under DOST’s grant-in-aid program, and further development-partner funding may be needed to support the longer-term expansion. Source:Tech Pilipinas.
