Electric-vehicle adoption is moving in opposite directions across two major markets. Reuters reported that EVs represented**23.2%**of European vehicle sales through September 2026, up from 17.7% a year earlier. In the United States, EV sales fell 30.7% over the same period and accounted for 6% of overall vehicle sales, down from 8.5% a year earlier. The comparison shows that consumer demand depends heavily on policy, price, available models and market conditions worldwide today.

Europe’s growth is linked to tighter tailpipe-emission rules, a wider selection of vehicles and higher fuel costs. More than 150 EV models were on sale in Europe during the first half of 2026, compared with about 100 in 2024, according to Transport & Environment. Many models cost below €25,000, while national incentives can lower the purchase price further. Chinese automakers have also increased competition by bringing more electric models into European markets for consumers and fleet operators in Europe today.

US buyers have responded differently after the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit. Hybrid sales rose 23% through the first three quarters and reached 15.6% of total sales, while used-EV sales increased 19%, according to figures cited by Reuters. The shift suggests some consumers still want lower fuel costs but are choosing technologies with familiar refueling options, lower upfront prices or less concern about charging and driving range for many mainstream buyers today in practice now locally.

The market split is relevant to the Philippines because local EV adoption will also depend on incentives, charging infrastructure, model availability and ownership costs. Europe’s stronger share does not automatically translate to Philippine demand, and US weakness does not prove that EVs have peaked globally. Instead, the figures show how quickly policy and product choices influence adoption. For local buyers and businesses, the practical questions remain price, charging access, after-sales support and whether available vehicles fit daily routes locally too.
