Google is beginning a phased rollout ofGemini Skills in Workspaceon October 5, introducing reusable custom instructions that can be invoked repeatedly and combined in one prompt. Google’s Workspace Updates announcement says Rapid Release domains should finish by October 12, while Scheduled Release begins October 19 and runs into mid-November. The feature is meant to help users turn team rules, templates and reference files into repeatable workflows across many Workspace apps. Availability depends on the customer’s edition, administrator settings and release channel.
Skills are designed to capture how a team performs recurring work, such as applying brand rules, preparing status updates, reviewing invoices or building proposal materials. Google says users can create and refine Skills collaboratively in Docs, use reference files and stack multiple Skills in a single request. The Workspace feature is not a new foundation model, but a customization layer for Gemini. It also does not currently sync with Skills created in the separate Gemini app, so users must manage those environments independently.
Google lists Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; Google AI Pro for Education; and AI Expanded Access among the eligible Workspace plans, subject to administrative controls. Workspace Skills are currently limited to users over 18. A separate Gemini-app rollout begins October 13 for eligible Google AI subscription tiers, with timing and age rules that differ from Workspace.A Philippine account may not receive the feature on the same day, because Google’s announcement gives product eligibility and release-channel timing rather than a country-by-country availability list.
Gems are not disappearing immediately. Google says they move to the Gemini app Settings panel on November 17, while business and enterprise support ends no sooner than March 1, 2027, and education support no sooner than June 1, 2027. Existing Workspace Studio flows continue during the transition.Users should treat Skills as a gradual replacement path, not a same-day shutdown or feature-for-feature copy of Gems. Administrators can check their edition, controls and rollout channel before deciding when to create new reusable Gemini instructions.
